The starting point
A story, emotion, lyric, image or sound gives a song somewhere to begin. The subject and the feeling come first.
Behind the songs. Behind the characters.
One real person. Four imaginary band members. A world of songs, stories and ideas.
A real person behind an imaginary band
Debutante Club is my creation. The band members are fictional, but the ideas, memories and feelings behind the music are very real.
I'm Gary. I've spent much of my life looking for stories in pictures, places and people. Photography taught me to notice the details — the look, the atmosphere, the moment that says more than a thousand words.
Music has become another way of telling those stories. Debutante Club gives them a name, a sound and a world to live in. Jack, Ruby-Mae, Cal and Wade are characters I imagined and developed to give the project its own identity.
“The band is imaginary. The feelings are not.”
The real and the imagined
One is real. The others live in the songs.
This is a playful imagined meeting between me and the people who inhabit the Debutante Club universe. Jack Mercer, Ruby-Mae Carter, Cal Dawson and Wade Hollis are fictional characters — created to give the music a face, a personality and a shared identity.
They aren't real performers or a touring band. Their histories, friendships and personalities are part of the creative world around the songs. The emotions and ideas that inspire the music, however, come from real observations, memories and imagination.
Because I wanted the songs to belong to a world, not just sit together in a playlist. The characters help connect the music, artwork and stories into one continuing project.
How the music comes together
The songs can begin with a memory, a feeling, a phrase, a lyric, a guitar sound or a story I want to explore. Sometimes I arrive with a clear direction; sometimes the idea develops as I experiment. AI tools help me explore musical possibilities and turn those starting points into arrangements and recordings.

AI-assisted production lets me try different arrangements, vocal approaches, tempos and musical directions.
I listen, compare, refine and decide what works. I guide the creative direction and choose what belongs in the Debutante Club catalogue.
AI is an important part of the production process, and I'm open about that. The tools help make the work possible; the ideas, direction and final choices give the project its identity.
A photographer's eye
Photography has always been about more than getting a technically good picture. It is about atmosphere, timing, composition and the small details that make an image stay with you.
That same instinct runs through Debutante Club. Album artwork, characters, locations and visual style all help create a setting for the songs. Sometimes a picture comes first. Sometimes the song suggests the image. Often they meet somewhere in between.
The images here are examples of that wider visual world: not just decoration for the music, but another way of telling the story.

The heart of Debutante Club
The reason I began this musical journey was simple and very personal: I wanted to write songs for my wife, Helen. Many of those songs grew from memories and feelings that are special to us. Writing them gave me a way to understand and express things that are sometimes difficult to put into words. As the music developed, so did the world around it — the characters, the stories and the images. But at its heart, Debutante Club still comes back to that first inspiration: Helen, and the feelings behind the songs.
